DESQview Version 2.4
Additional Information
This file contains information which does not
appear in the current manual or supplement.
**** If you would like to print this file,
simply type
COPY READ.ME PRN: ─┘
at the DOS prompt.
**** DESQview and DOS 5
The shipping versions of all Quarterdeck
products are compatible with DOS 5. Users of
Quarterdeck products who have installed DOS 5
should observe the following guidelines with our
currently shipping products:
1) Do not use the "DOS=UMB" option or the
DEVICEHIGH or LOADHIGH statements.
Quarterdeck's LOADHI technology, available with
our QEMM and QRAM products, makes the "DOS=UMB"
option unnecessary.
2) The "DOS=HIGH" option sometimes results in a
net loss of conventional memory inside DESQview.
If you use the "DOS=HIGH" option, inspect the
DESQview Memory Status program before and after
"DOS=HIGH" to determine which configuration
gives you the largest window size in DESQview.
3) Use QEMM-386, not DOS 5's EMM386.EXE, as an
80386 memory manager if you are running on an
80386. EMM386 cannot provide the range of
features that QEMM-386 can.
4) If you load DOS 5's DOSKEY before DESQview,
you should load it again in each DESQview
window in which you wish to use it.
5) Don't use the DOS 5 DOSSHELL's task switcher
option with DESQview.
**** Intel SatisFAXtion Board
If you wish to use the Intel SatisFAXtion board
in a DESQview window, you will probably need
the HOOKINT.ZIP file on the Quarterdeck
Bulletin Board at (310) 396-3904. More
detailed instructions are available with the
HOOKINT program on our bulletin board.
**** AST Premium Exec 386SX/20 Notebook
ACER 1100SX
DESQview-386 users often experience a delay of
a minute or more when entering DESQview on the
AST Premium Exec 386SX/20 Notebook and on the
Acer 1100SX. The delay is due to timing
problems with a BIOS call that DESQview makes
to get information about port mice. The delay
vanishes if a port mouse is plugged into the
mouse port on these machines; it is reduced to
8-15 seconds if the IGNOREA20 parameter is
added to the QEMM-386 line in the CONFIG.SYS
file. There is also a technical note called
DELAYMS.PAT, #201 on the Quarterdeck Q/FAX
service at (310) 314-3214, that will instruct
you on how to patch DESQview's DV.EXE file to
remove the delay.
**** Microsoft Windows
DESQview's Learn feature and its Transfer
function do not work in windows running
Microsoft Windows. Windows takes its
keystrokes directly from the keyboard hardware,
and never sees the keystrokes that DESQview's
Learn and Transfer place in the BIOS's keyboard
buffer.
**** PageMaker 4 .DVP file
When installing PageMaker 4 onto your DESQview
menu, it may be necessary to manually enter the
name of the directory where Windows is
installed onto the Change a Program screen.
This information should be placed in the
"Directory" field of the Change a Program /
Standard Options screen.
**** Q/FAX
Q/FAX, a service of Quarterdeck Office Systems,
allows you to receive technical notes, product
information and upgrade information right on
your fax machine. The technical notes are
particularly extensive and provide answers to
the most common problems that may be
encountered when using Quarterdeck products.
Using Q/FAX is easy. Here's what you do:
1. Pick up the phone at your fax machine and
call (310) 314-3214. Q/FAX is available 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. This number is for
outgoing Q/FAX service only. If you want to
send us a fax, send to (310) 314-3217.
2. When you hear the computer answer, use your
touchtone phone to enter the code number of the
fax you want (from the Master List), followed
by the pound sign (#). You may order up to
three faxes per session. To correct an error,
press the asterisk key (*) and enter the number
again.
3. When prompted by the computer, press the
"START/COPY" or "RECEIVE" button on your fax
machine. This is often the green button on
your machine. You may then hang up and should
immediately receive your fax.
The first fax you will want to request is our
Master List of faxes (#100). This lists
contains a full, up-to-date, description of all
the faxes that are available, along with the
numbers you enter to get them.
